Jonny Wolf’s single “Back to You” is about a singer whose relationship falls apart when he goes away on tour for the first time.

The members of the band in the video were puppets based on the only foods Wolf claimed he could afford while on tour: ramen, peanuts, cheap beer, and beef jerky. I decided to create MTV-style interviews of the band members on their experiences on tour with Wolf, and released one interview a week on social during the month leading up to the video’s official release, as a way to preemptively get our audiences emotionally invested in the characters and the story before the launch.

For the puppets, Wolf and I reached out to local musicians in the NY area to be the voice actors for these puppets. The voice actors weren’t given a script, but were provided a brief character notes and allowed to improvise accordingly. Wolf recorded the actors’ audio in his studio, then I animated my puppets to match the audio, even the bloopers!
